Latitude, Longitude, Altitude, Districts, Rivers & Beaches of San Juan Del Sur

San Juan del Sur is located at 11º and 15’ latitude north, 85º and 53’ longitude west; its altitude is of 3.58 meters above sea level. In 1996 its population reached 13,786 inhabitants for a density 19.5 inhabitants/km2, its average temperature is 27º C and gets approximately 1660mm precipitation per year, it has a total area of 598 km2 and its districts include: Las Brisas , Carrizal, La Cuesta,  Ostional, Plan Grande, Pueblo Nuevo y Tortuga. 


The most important rivers are: San Juan, Escameca, Escamequita, La Flor, Ostional, El Naranjo and Marsella. 






The city is 140 kilometres away from the capital Managua and just 43 kilometres from the border of Peñas Blancas.  


It is common to hear stories about the fights between the winds from the north and the South, called Papagayos or Northeast which are present from December thru February, the strong winds of the West and South whip from May to October. 


San Juan del Sur has over 14 pristine and beautiful beaches, true paradise where humans have not exercised their power.  Some of the highlight beaches are: San Juan del Sur a horseshow bay, Maderas, Marsella, Majagual, Popoyo, Eddy, Yanki, La Flor, El Coco, Ostional, Ocotal, Playa Blanca, Playa Rosada, among others. 


Its main economic items are agriculture, fishing and tourism, though also in the area around San Juan are lime mines, stone quarry, loamy coal and calcareous soils which are good for ceramic production
