Located in the Department of Rivas, San Juan del Sur was discovered in 1522 by the Spaniard Andrés Niño during his exploratory trip searching for a strait between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The town was named San Juan del Sur to differentiate it from San Juan del Norte in the Atlantic Ocean.

During the war against Walker, many military expeditions disembarked in San Juan del Sur and although the history of the town is bounded to that of the port, the history of the port is older than the city itself.

This port town has had many changes of name through a relatively short history.

In 1827, it was provisionally authorized as a maritime port by the Confederation of Central American Republics and was known as the Nicaraguan Port, in 1830 its name was changed to Puerto de la Independencia, and again in 1840 to San Juan de la Concordia, granting its definitive right to import and to export.

On November 12, 1851 it was elevated to the category of “Major Port”, the town reach the scale of city
and in 1852 the Port and city were named “Ciudad Pineda”, and was declared a terminal port for what was then the Traffic Route of both trade and passengers between New York and San Francisco, and vice versa.
